Lol, Ok. Basically, the series follows the events of four clans of wild cats. they have territories and hierarchy as well as important rituals that make them unique. the first series specifically follows a former Kittypet (house cat) named Rusty/Firepaw/Fireheart as he leaves his home in search of more for his life, and tells the tale of how he adjusted to clan life and became a strong and important warrior, yada yada yada. The second series is also worth reading, though it gets a little far fetched after that, so I stopped then.
Mountainclan works in much the same way as the clans in the story, only they currently they don't have other clans to compete with (however, our current story line is proving otherwise.)
How the clans work: The clan, first of all, has a name that relates to them in some way. In the story, Thunderclan is the clan Rusty joins, and they are noble and strong like thunder and lightning. the other clans in the story are Riverclan, Windclan, and Shadowclan, and you can guess what they stand for, as the meaning for them is much more simple. Our clan lives int the mountains, hence the name.
They believe that their fallen and ancestors watch over them from the heavens, the group of spirit warriors go by some meaningful name, in most cases Starclan, but there are variations of this. this clan is a large part of their culture and daily life, and their ancestors do indeed hold immense power, as they can make predictions, and most importantly, can grant the leaders of the clans Nine lives, literally.
Which brings us to rank. Names are closely related to rank, and hold much significance for the cat. when a kit is born, they are given the prefix of their name, be it Bramble or Rain or Sparrow, and they receive the suffix -kit, such as Bramblekit, Rainkit and Sparrowkit. When they come of age, 6 moons to be precise (which as you can guess are cycles of the moon) they begin to train to become defenders of the clan. they are called Apprentices, and their suffix is changed from -kit to -paw. They train with their Mentor, an older experienced cat, until deemed worthy on several fronts to be promoted. as apprentices, most cats train to be Warriors, which are the fighters of the clan, but a few chose a different path, which I'll talk about later.
Warriors are fully fledged members of the clan, only directed by their leaders and older cats, but for the most part have more freedom, and more responsibility. Their suffix is changed from -paw to whatever the leader finds fitting to their character (which seems to be foot for our leader) and make such variations as Bramblethorn, Rainecho, or Sparrowsong. They go on hunting patrols, to gather food, boarder patrols, to make sure their territory remains secure and well marked, and, when at times of conflict, battle patrols. When a female warrior becomes pregnant, they become queens and temporarily or permanently relinquish their warrior duties to tend their kits in the nursery until they are old enough to take care of themselves. Senior warriors are merely older more experienced warriors that have earned respect, and a small amount of authority, through their performance.
Higher up the hierarchical branch is the deputy. there is (ussually) only one for the clan, and they assist their leader in the politics between the other clans (if present) and to organize the clan into partols and duties. should the leader die (lose their last life) they are almost certainly the next to become leader. they receive no name change. the highest form of authority within the clan is the Clan leader, who once declared leader, travels to sacred ground (Moonstone, Moonpool, Moontree, Mooncave, Moontrashcanonthesideoftheroad) where starclan are most powerfully attached to the living, and receive their nine lives, and the suffix of -star. they oversee all workings of the clan, and have a deep connection with Starclan.
Another path an apprentice can choose is one of healing. the keep the suffix -paw, but instead of learning about battle strategy and hunting techniques (though they are not neglected in thous areas) they learn under the Medicine cat. The Medicine cat also has a deep connection with starclan, and are supposed to be respected and protected (usually) by every clan, regardless of their loyalties. They learn about all of the herbs and medicines and how to use them on sick and wounded cats, and of how to interpreter signs and omens from their ancestors. they make periodical trips to the sacred ground to share dreams with Starclan and to keep contact with them. They also have alot of authority in the clans social structure, though they still answer to their leaders most of the time. They are forbidden from mating. though they have the same suffix rituals as the warriors do, they are often more impressive or interesting that those of the warriors, Bramblepath, Rainwish, Sparrowsight.
And when any cat grows of an age too old for their duties, be they Warrior, Deputy, Leader, or Medicine cat, they may retire and become Elders, no name change. (though the leaders name im not sure about, either they keep the title star, or they revert back to their warrior name.....Ive played on sites that went either way) They live comfortably, highly respected and revered for their wisdom and experience, and are the story keepers and almost sages to the clan. Apprentices take care of them, and they for the most part live out their days in peace, but if worst comes to worst, they may still jump to defend their clan, as long as they don't poof into a cloud of dust first.
Several other things go on in the clans that are important mainly for the books, and not the site, but feel free to ask me or anyone else questions if you find you don't understand something. =)

Wow that is a long post. Me I tend to love Silverwing roleplays. I have several bats to some extent. How do the cats interact with other characters?

Typically they express emotion not only through their words but also body movement. When interacting with a cat in a higher position than themselves, they are obedient and docile, with the exception of kits, who are rowdy and rambunctious.
Kits are also the ones who tend to react with the most exaggeration. They are often have a super admiration for warriors and deputies, and are in absolute aw of leaders, and medicine cats get a lot of respect right off, or they will be scolded by their mothers.
Apprentices must do as told, but are still young and playful, but begin to learn maturity as they develop and treat older cats with much respect, unless they think what is happening is absolutely wrong. more often then not, they are eager to learn, and ask alot of questions of their mentors, whom they grow a special bond with.
Warriors have a code, The Warrior Code, which is similar to the Code of Chivalry used by the knights in their era. they have respect for all members of the clan, though they exert their authority over unruly apprentices and may seem to look down on them at times, but generally do not actually disapprove of them. Some may retain a kit like energy and remain playful, while others take of a seriousness that can be expressed to others in either kindness or sternness. However, as their leader, they obey almost always without objection, unless again there is something morally wrong about an order. They also have respect for other clan cats, but without the connection of living together, it is less.
Medicine cats can be rough or kind, but they use the power they have to make cats obey when they are doing wrong. They are the advice givers, the healers, and so often have a patience that would be pressing for other cats to have, though some can have a rather short fuse. every other cat treats them with respect, even the leaders, though they still sit above them.
Deputies are confident, and really it just depend on the individually character of the cat, but they are commanding and normally cool headed.
Leaders command respect, and often show great strength and confidence when dealing with matters presented to them, as they must be smart and cleaver as well as tough. but incredible understanding often accompanies these traits, as they represent their entire clan, they must get to know them, from the oldest elder to the youngest kit.
Elders are grumpy and often complain of sore spots or fleas that bother their frail bodies. However, their wisdom is often called on when important issues come up, and are treated with incredible respect. However, Kits and apprentices are the ones who get the most contact with them, and they love to tell stories.
As far as how they speak, they use terms that were made up by the author of the book, including swears such as "mouse dung", and measurements such as "fox lengths" You could probably look them up on Wikipedia or some other site if you want to learn them. a number of other phases are specific to their culture, one in particular comes to mind, "May starclan light your path."
EDIT: seasons are also named : New Leaf, Green Leaf, Leaf Fall, and Leaf Bare. Should be self explanatory.

Aw, Wiffle, you're making me blush! And yes, Nightpaw's pretty much covered the basics of Warriors. I would've said check out wiki, but StarClan* knows that's got a bunch of information that a person new to the series would be overwhelmed by. *StarClan is composed of the clan's ancestors that have obviously passed on. Although they do not play an active role in the everyday lives of the warriors, StarClan is often in charge of warning clan(s) through communication with leaders, medicine cats, or medicine cat apprentices. Also, a clan leader will receive its nine lives (literally) from his ancestors. As far as we know age is still recognized in StarClan, so kits and elders are equally possible.

Kudos my friend! The only thing I must point out is that those are all very much stereotypes. I play a medicine cat (an alternate version of Glazey actually) who is mentally insane and has MPD. I have also known leaders who were total push overs. Even bluestar in the series became everything but strong and confident.
The key to a good roleplay, be it warriors or pokemon or silverwing, is that there must be originality. If every elder was grumpy (not that anyone on regular sites plays elders) then everything would be bland.

Careful Sleety! Might upset the Bosslady!
Anyway, I was indeed listing stereotypes. Just a general thing that is common in those characters. A good story does depend on diversity and things outside the norm, but That is a typical description to someone who has not read the series.
