I found out today that cats see only in grayscale and some infrared. Because color's not as important to them as movement and smell. So if Flowertail was looking at Willow and Bramble, they would look the same, except Bramblepaw would be a little darker, and depending on the light, some reddishness.
But we don't care. It's cooler if they can see color. And who cares about being realistic? The way Sleety plays her cats, they use their tails as hands. Almost all of us make them grin.
Ha ha.

Ok, their tails /are/ like hands... I look at them as ah... thumbs. Or an arm that they use to catch others' attention, since they, ah... can't use their actual "arms"?

Yes, I also see them more as arms, used to express emotion and keep balance and such more than to pick things up or hold stuff.

As far as color-blindess goes, the Silverwing trilogy is amazing because it doesn't actually use any colors throughout the whole book, but you don't even really notice unless you're looking because the writing is so good. The bats don't see colors, and the story doesn't -need- colors. It's awesome. (Read it if you haven't, y'all.)
Also, MountainClan ≠ reality. =D So we can give our cats tailhands, make them grin and see color, and make them fly!
Okay, maybe not fly. Although that would be pretty neat.
