A Day at the Lake

[Hawkpaw]

Hawkpaw trotted through the forest, a sort of a grin on her face despite the moss collected in her jaws. She had decided to go and collect moss, then fill it with water and bring it to the elders. They still had plenty left from her last trip, but she wanted to get on the old cats' good sides. She loved hearing their stories, and she knew the more they liked her, the more stories she would get to hear.

After quite sometime, the glassy pool Hawkpaw had been searching for finally came into view; the Great Lake! Hawkpaw absolutely loved venturing down here, but since her apprentice ceremony a few moons prior, she had been unable to make the journey as often as she wished. The long-furred white apprentice trotted down the final hill and across the sand until she finally reached her destination.

Setting down the large ball of moss beside her, she peered at the water. It was a hot day in green-leaf, and she was very warm. Surely the elders wouldn't mind waiting for the extra moss they did not actually need a little longer! Hawkpaw took a leap forward and grinned even wider as the cool water splashed beneath her paws. She padded out even farther, until her paws could no longer touch the ground. She began to swim around, giggling as the fish in the pool swam off, trying to avoid their predator. Hawkpaw turned around and began to swim back towards the shore, when a bush near the far edge of the sand began to rustle.

"Hello!" cried the apprentice as the head of her clanmate appeared from the foliage.

Kaity poked out of the bush she had caught herself in, embarrassed that an apprentice had caught her struggling. Hey, at least she was getting the hang of all of the clan names, no if she could just get used to the territory.
"Err...Hi, Hawkpaw, .....What are you doing?"
She said, hiding a laugh as the soaked cat dragged her long sodden fur onto the sand.

Kaity scraped herself free of the bush, and trotted down to the shore, twitching her hear to shake off a stray twig on her head. She grinned, hoping it seemed like she was glad to see Hawkpaw, instead of her failure to contain her humor at the sight o her.

Hawkpaw shook her fur violently, causing water to fly everywhere. She grinned at Kaity and said, "I was swimming! Come on, Kaity! It's really fun! You should try it! I know you'll like it! I wish Falcontail would come down here and try it too! I can just see he'd like it sooooooo much! Plus I'd get to spend time with him! Maybe I could teach my mentor to swim! Wouldn't that be funny?" she laughed at the thought, "An apprentice teaching her mentor to swim! That would be great! Cause, you know, it's supposed to be the other way around! But swimming's fun! Come on, Kaity! Get in the water! Please!" Hawkpaw turned towards the water and flicked her tail, signaling for Kaity to follow, all the while sending more droplets of water flying through the warm air by the lake. She walked back into the water and began to swim around again.

Kaity's whiskers quivered as a small spay of water flew at her face, and the thought of feting much wetter was not very appealing to her right away.
"Maybe Falcontail will come looking for you and you can push him in. He might not do it otherwise...." She laughed a little, flicking the tip of her tail at what she thought would be the look on Falcontail's face if he were suddenly plunged into a world of water.
She shook her head in response to the offer. "I'd rather not myself, though...."

"PLEASE, KAITY!" Hawkpaw begged the other cat. "It's so much fun! Watch!" Hawkpaw began to paddle around, and dipped under the surface to swim under the surface for a few moments. As she bobbed up from beneath the surface, she became covered in seaweed. She giggled excitedly and paddled around, beckoning for Kaity to come in too.

Kaity sighed as the apprentice called pathetically for a friend to join her. "Alright, alright..."She meowed as she trotted down to the waters edge. She carefully dabbed her paw in the clear water of the lake, not exactly ecstatic to jump into the wet hole in the ground. But she actually wanted to have some fun with the young cat, so she began to slowly wade into the pond. She grimaced as it reached her belly fur. It was cooler than she liked, and her instinct told her to just jump out of the lake and shake the droplets off of her, then sit and clean her fur. She looked back to shore, thinking it wouldn't be much of a hassle to jump out of the lake without getting much more wet, but she stayed where she was, tail held up above the water. "Okay......I'm in....."
